Mentor expectations and safeguarding
As a volunteer mentor with Hackit Design, you will support trainees who may be vulnerable or have additional needs. This page explains what we expect from you and what you can expect from us. Please read it carefully before you register your interest.

Safeguarding expectations
Safeguarding is everyone's responsibility at Hackit Design. We work with people who may be vulnerable, and we take emotional safety seriously.
- Complete the safeguarding induction before mentoring begins
- Maintain professional boundaries at all times
- Keep all personal and sensitive information confidential
- Report any concerns promptly to the designated safeguarding lead
- Follow the Hackit Design code of conduct and data protection policy
Boundaries and appropriate conduct
Clear boundaries protect both you and the trainees you support.
- Keep all mentoring sessions in professional settings or scheduled video calls
- Do not share personal contact details with trainees
- Do not offer medical or clinical advice outside your professional competence
- Treat all trainees with dignity and respect
- If a trainee shares something concerning, listen calmly and report it
Reporting concerns and escalation route
If you are worried about a trainee's safety or wellbeing, act quickly. Do not wait.

Contact the designated safeguarding lead as soon as possible

Do not investigate the concern yourself

Record what was said or observed factually and without judgement

Follow the guidance you receive from the safeguarding lead
Urgent safeguarding concerns
For urgent concerns outside working hours, contact the emergency services on 999.

You are never on your own. Support is always available.
- Your designated safeguarding lead is available for advice and support
- The learning and development team can help with mentoring challenges
- You can request a review of your mentoring arrangement at any time
- If you need to step back, we will support you to do so without judgement
