Find out moreWhat the mandatory courses cover
All four mandatory courses are designed to give you the knowledge and skills to work confidently with disabled, neurodivergent and chronically ill clients. Each course is CPD-accredited and counts towards your continuing professional development.
PAS Standards
What it covers
An introduction to PAS 6463, the first UK standard addressing sensory and neurological needs in the built environment. This course covers sensory dynamics including hypersensitivity and hyposensitivity, visual contrast and Light Reflectance Values, the two senses principle for wayfinding, glare mitigation, thermal safety and the role of restorative spaces.
Why it matters
Understanding PAS 6463 ensures your work meets the latest UK guidance on neuroinclusive design. It equips you to identify where buildings and homes fall short and to recommend practical, evidence-based improvements. Clients and commissioners increasingly expect professionals to understand these standards.
Emotional Safety in the Built Environment
What it covers
This course explores how the built environment affects emotional wellbeing, stress responses and feelings of safety. It covers how design choices around colour, texture, layout, privacy, noise and lighting can either support or undermine a person's sense of calm and control. You will learn how to create spaces that feel safe, predictable and empowering for people who have experienced adversity, sensory overwhelm or mental health challenges.
Why it matters
Many of the people you will work with through Hackit Design have experienced difficult life circumstances. Understanding how spaces affect emotional safety means you can make design and installation decisions that actively support healing, dignity and independence rather than adding to someone's distress.
Biophilic Design
What it covers
An introduction to biophilic design principles and how to bring nature into the built environment. This course covers the use of natural light, ventilation, plants, natural materials, views of nature, water features and organic patterns. It also covers the evidence base for biophilic design, including its effects on stress reduction, cognitive function, recovery times and overall wellbeing.
Why it matters
Research consistently shows that connection to nature improves health outcomes. Patients recover faster, workers are more productive, residents feel calmer and building occupants report higher satisfaction. Biophilic design is not decoration. It is a practical, evidence-based approach that adds measurable value to every project you work on.
Safeguarding
What it covers
This course covers your responsibilities when working with vulnerable adults and children. It includes recognising signs of abuse, neglect and exploitation, understanding the legal framework including the Care Act 2014 and the Mental Capacity Act 2005, knowing when and how to raise a concern, maintaining professional boundaries and record keeping.
Why it matters
As a professional entering people's homes and personal spaces, you have a duty of care. Many of the clients you will work with are disabled, neurodivergent, chronically ill or in vulnerable circumstances. This course ensures you can recognise risks, respond appropriately and protect both the client and yourself.
