We have partnered with Flower Skills and Training in Charlton to create a direct pathway from construction training into meaningful, paid work adapting homes for disabled, neurodivergent and chronically ill people in South East London.

Flowerskills brings over 20 years of construction training expertise and nearly 6,000 learners helped. Hackit brings the projects, the specialist knowledge and the community that needs your skills.

About Flowerskills

Flower Skills and Training Ltd is a specialist construction training centre based in Charlton, South East London. They have been operating for over 20 years and have helped 5,918 learners achieve their goals.

Their mission is to provide high-quality construction training to people of all ages and all abilities, helping them gain industry-recognised qualifications. They work with schools (pre-16 and post-16), school leavers, adult unemployed, employees and employers of all sizes.

Painting and Decorating 5 days (over 1 to 5 weeks)

Painting and Decorating Taster

In-house Certificate

An introduction to the basics of painting and decorating, covering wallpapering and painting. Elements include preparation of surfaces, applying paint with a brush and roller and hanging wallpaper including internal and external corners.

Surface preparation and paint application are essential skills for every home adaptation project. Understanding how to work with different surfaces, apply specialist coatings and achieve a clean finish is the foundation of creating calm, sensory-friendly spaces.

Carpentry and Construction 15 days

Basic Construction Skills

City and Guilds Level 1 Award in Construction Skills

An introduction to basic construction trade skills delivered in workshops, combined with health and safety training to keep you safe on site.

Why it matters for accessible homes

This gives you a solid grounding across multiple trades , the kind of versatile skills needed when adapting homes where no two projects are the same.

Carpentry and Construction 1 to 3 days per week over 1 to 2 years

Multi Skills for Schools (Post-16)

City and Guilds Level 1 Award / Certificate / Extended Certificate / Diploma in Construction Skills

A multi-skills course covering the basics in a range of different trades including painting and decorating, brickwork, tiling and plastering. Assessed mainly on practical tasks with some theory on health and safety.

Why it matters for accessible homes

Multi-skilled workers are invaluable on adaptation projects where a single visit might involve tiling a wet room, adjusting a doorway and fitting grab rail backboards.

Carpentry and Construction 3 weeks

In2Construction (including CSCS)

City and Guilds Level 1 Award in Construction Skills plus CSCS Card

Covers basic construction skills in up to 2 different trades, combined with health and safety training. You leave with a City and Guilds Level 1 Award, a health and safety qualification and your CSCS card.

This course is free to adults aged 19 or over who are in receipt of an eligible benefit such as Universal Credit.

The CSCS card is essential for working on any regulated construction site. This course gets you qualified and site-ready in just 3 weeks.

Plastering 5 days

Plastering Taster

Practical skills (no formal qualification)

The basics of plastering including health and safety, making up mixes, applying render and plaster.

Why it matters for accessible homes

Plastering is one of the most in-demand skills on adaptation projects , from patching walls after grab rail installation to skimming entire rooms before redecoration.

Carpentry and Construction 3 days per week for 1 academic year (minimum)

Post-16 Multi Trade Level 2

City and Guilds Level 2 Diploma

Learn, develop and practise a range of trade skills to prepare for employment or career progression in building maintenance. Also suitable for those unsure which trade to specialise in.

Why it matters for accessible homes

Level 2 is the standard expected by local authorities and housing associations for DFG-funded work. This qualification opens the door to paid adaptation projects.

Health and Safety 5 days

Health and Safety Basics (including CSCS)

City and Guilds Level 1 Award in H and S in a Construction Environment plus CSCS Card

Training and test for both the City and Guilds Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment and the CSCS test.

Why it matters for accessible homes

Health and safety is non-negotiable when working in the homes of disabled and vulnerable people. This course ensures you understand your responsibilities before you step on site.

CSCS Training and Test

CSCS Card

Targeted health and safety training in preparation for formal CSCS testing. Flowerskills is an accredited CSCS training centre and can help you apply for your card.

Why it matters for accessible homes

No CSCS card, no site access. This is the quickest route to getting your card if you already have trade experience.

Specialist 1 week (5 days)

Retrofit

Level 2 Award

Future-proof skills in energy-efficient building. With the UK's push for energy-efficient buildings, retrofit specialists are in high demand.

Why it matters for accessible homes

Many adaptation projects overlap with energy efficiency improvements , insulation, ventilation, draught-proofing. Understanding retrofit means you can offer a more complete service to clients.

From your first day of training to your first paid adaptation project

Step 1

Train with Flowerskills

Choose a course that matches your interests and experience level. Learn practical construction skills in a supportive, hands-on workshop environment in Charlton.

Step 2

Join the Hackit Trainee Hub

Once you have completed your Flowerskills training, or while you are still studying, sign up to the Hackit Trainee Hub. You will get access to CPD training, mentoring, shadowing and a pathway to partnership.

Step 3

Build Your Portfolio

Work alongside experienced trades, OTs and designers on real projects. Document your work, build your portfolio and earn your Hackit credentials.

Step 4

Become a Hackit Partner

Once you are ready, graduate to full partner status. Get listed on Find a Pro, receive referrals and access all the portal tools , at no cost.

Your pathway to partnership

1,200 supervised hours. That is the benchmark we use to know when you are ready to step from trainee to freelance partner. Here is how it works.

Training and Foundations (0 to 300 hours)

You complete your Flowerskills construction training and sign up to the Hackit Trainee Hub. In this phase you are learning core trade skills in a workshop environment and beginning your Hackit CPD training in PAS standards, emotional safety, biophilic design and safeguarding.

What you will do

  • Complete your Flowerskills qualification
  • Sign up to the Trainee Hub at no cost
  • Start your Hackit CPD training
  • Build your online portfolio

Shadowing and Assisted Work (300 to 800 hours)

You begin shadowing experienced Hackit partners on real adaptation projects across South East London. You will observe how OTs assess, how designers specify and how trades install to DFG standards. Gradually, you take on simple tasks under supervision.

What you will do

  • Shadow experienced partners on site
  • Assist with supervised tasks
  • Document all hours in your portfolio
  • Complete safeguarding and RAMS training

Support you will get

  • Paired with a mentor partner
  • Guided site visits and tool inductions
  • Regular feedback from project leads
  • Lone working safety built in

Independent Practice Under Supervision (800 to 1,200 hours)

You take on increasingly independent work on adaptation projects. An experienced partner reviews your work, signs off each stage and provides feedback. You are building confidence, speed and the professional judgement that comes from real experience.

What you will do

  • Complete adaptation tasks independently
  • Communicate with clients and project leads
  • Submit work for formal sign-off
  • Build your verified portfolio of completed work

  • Paid at trainee rates for your work
  • Stage sign-off and feedback from partners
  • Access to all Hackit calculators and tools
  • Quality assurance built into every project

Graduate to Freelance Partner at 1,200 Hours

Once you reach 1,200 supervised hours and your portfolio is signed off, you graduate from the Trainee Hub to full freelance partner status. You get listed on Find a Pro, receive direct referrals and set your own rates. Your years of membership are free. Tools are coming soon.
